SEO due diligence before buying a domain: the checks that protect your money
افحص سيو النطاقA used domain comes with its history
When you buy an expiring or resold domain you buy the whole record: its links, its old content and its reputation with search engines. SEO due diligence is not optional — it is the difference between an asset that compounds and one that can never rank again.
1. Backlink quality, not backlink count
A thousand links from comment farms are worth less than ten links from real sites in the same niche. Check:
- The ratio of referring domains to total links; the closer to one, the cleaner the profile.
- Anchor texts: repeated gambling or payday-loan phrases mean a past that will not help you.
- Language and country of linking sites: a mismatch with the name's market signals link networks.
2. Archive history
Review archive snapshots across five years. Look for long gaps, sudden changes of language or topic, or pages stuffed with outbound links. A domain that stayed on one topic for years is the lowest-risk buy.
3. Penalty traces
Practical signals: the name does not appear when you search for it directly, no page is indexed despite years of content, or backlink quality collapses inside a short window. Any of these should cut fair value sharply.
4. Current indexation
Search the exact name. If the domain is old, had content, and nothing shows up, treat it as a warning worth a lower price — or a deal worth skipping.
5. Compare candidates instead of judging one
An absolute score can mislead; a comparison rarely does. Run three candidates through domain comparison and the gaps in SEO health and risk appear immediately. Then run a full SEO audit on the winner.
Turning the audit into a price
Treat the audit result as a discount on fair value:
- Clean record, natural links: no discount.
- Mid-quality links and a patchy history: 20% to 40% discount.
- Penalty traces or link networks: buy at registration price only, and value the SEO at zero.
What to do next
Use the domain appraisal guide to convert your audit into a number, and read the Flowdiction methodology to see how each score is calculated.
