Think of the title as a promise

A title should say exactly what the page delivers, in the words a reader would use. Vague titles get impressions and no clicks; specific titles get fewer impressions and far more visits.

Length and term placement

Keep titles under roughly 60 characters so they are not cut off, and put the main term near the beginning. Add the brand at the end only when there is room.

Descriptions are for clicking, not ranking

Descriptions do not rank pages, they sell them. Use up to 160 characters to answer "what will I get here?" and include a concrete detail: a number, a timeframe, a format.

Avoid the four common mistakes

Repeating the same title across pages, stuffing every keyword variant, writing a description that duplicates the title, and promising something the page does not contain.

Test with the snippet in mind

Write the title and description together and read them as they will appear in results. If the pair does not make sense without the page, rewrite it.

Steps to write a title and description for any page

  1. Identify the searcher's question: what did they type into Google to land here?
  2. Put the main keyword early in the title, without stuffing.
  3. Respect length: roughly 50–60 characters for titles and 120–155 for descriptions so they are not truncated.
  4. Make the description a specific promise: a number, a step, a free tool.
  5. Keep every page unique: never reuse a title or description on two pages.
  6. Review after four weeks in Search Console: high impressions with few clicks means the title needs to be clearer.

Worked example: before and after

Our appraisal page was titled "Tool — Flowdiction". It became "Free Domain Appraisal: How Much Is My Domain Worth?" with the description "Enter a domain and get a value estimate with clear reasons: length, extension and demand." The new title matches what people actually search; the description explains the result before the click. You can check any page's title and description length with the SEO audit.

Review after two weeks

Open Search Console, sort pages by impressions with low click-through, and rewrite those titles first. That is where the fastest traffic gains hide.
