A bulk domain research workflow that scales to thousands

Manual research does not scale past a few dozen names. A funnel does: cheap automated filters remove the obvious failures, scoring ranks what is left, and your attention goes only to the handful that survive.

Stage one — mechanical filters

Start with rules that need no lookup at all. Length caps, character restrictions, extension allow-lists and banned substrings typically remove seventy to ninety percent of a raw list in seconds, and they never produce a false positive you would regret.

  • Drop names longer than your maximum length.
  • Drop hyphens and digits unless your niche uses them.
  • Keep only the extensions you would actually buy.
  • Remove trademarked terms to avoid legal exposure.

Stage two — bulk scoring

Score the survivors on the signals you can fetch in bulk: name quality, authority indicators and availability. The goal is ranking, not certainty — you want the top fifty to be worth a human look, not to make a final decision automatically.

Stage three — manual review

Only now spend real time. Read the backlink sample, check the history, say the name out loud, and compare the finalists directly against each other. Twenty minutes per name is affordable when the funnel has already removed the other nine hundred and fifty.

Keep the list clean

Deduplicate on the registrable domain, strip protocols and paths on import, and normalise case before scoring. Most 'the tool found nothing' problems are actually dirty input files with inconsistent separators or stray columns.

Frequently asked

How large a list can I screen at once?
Batch in chunks of a few hundred. Smaller batches finish faster, surface errors earlier and are easier to re-run if an input file needs fixing.
Does bulk screening confirm availability?
Treat availability from any bulk source as indicative. Confirm at the registrar immediately before you buy.
