Check your site's readiness before applying

Activating Google AdSense on your domain is a clear six-step process, but a single small detail in any step can delay approval for weeks. In this guide, we walk you through the steps in the same order we applied them to our site, flowdiction.com, along with check tools to ensure each step is actually completed before moving to the next.

Before you start: Non-negotiable conditions

AdSense does not accept just any site. Before opening an account, make sure of three things:

  • A domain you own. A domain like flowdiction.com, not a subdomain on a free platform. If you haven't bought a domain yet, use the availability checker to find an available name, and the domain appraisal tool to estimate its value before purchase.
  • Sufficient original content. Ten truly useful pages are better than fifty filler pages. Review the AdSense approval checklist before applying.
  • Mandatory pages: A privacy policy mentioning Google ads, an "About Us" page, and a contact page.

Step 1: Create an AdSense account

Go to adsense.google.com and sign up with the Google account you want to link your earnings to. You will be asked for:

  1. Your site link (write it without https:// — e.g., flowdiction.com).
  2. Payment country — choose it carefully because it cannot be changed later.
  3. Accept the terms.

After that, you enter the AdSense dashboard, and your site appears in the "Sites" list with the status "Needs attention."

Step 2: Place the verification code in the site header

Google gives you a tag that looks like this:

`` <meta name="google-adsense-account" content="ca-pub-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"> ``

Place it in the <head> section of every page of your site — not just one page. This tag is Google's way of verifying that you actually own the site. In sites built with modern tools, the tag is added once to the root template and then automatically propagates to all pages.

How to verify? Open your site in a browser, click "View Source," and search for google-adsense-account. If you find it on the home page and an article page, the step is complete.

Step 3: Publish the ads.txt file

The ads.txt file is a text file placed in the domain root that tells advertisers who is authorized to sell your advertising space. Without it, Google will show you an "Earnings at risk" warning and ads won't be displayed even after approval.

The file contains one line:

`` google.com, pub-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0 ``

Replace the ID with your publisher ID (found in AdSense → Account → Settings). The file should open directly at the link:

How to verify? Open the link in your browser. If you see the line as plain text, the file is in place. If a 404 error or redirection page appears, the file is not published in the correct location. Note: Google may take up to 24 hours to crawl the file after it is published.

Step 4: Request review and wait for the decision

After placing the tag and the file, go back to AdSense → Sites and click "Request review." The waiting begins:

  • The review usually takes from a few days to two weeks, and sometimes longer.
  • During this time, do not change the site structure drastically or delete pages.
  • If rejected, the message mentions the general reason (e.g., "Low-value content"). Fix the cause and then reapply — there is no limit to the number of attempts.

The most common reasons for rejection: little or copied content, absence of a privacy policy, a slow or broken site on mobile, and internal links leading to empty pages.

Step 5: Activate Auto Ads after approval

Upon approval, your site status changes to "Ready." Now, activate the ads:

  1. Go to AdSense → Ads → By site.
  2. Choose your site and activate Auto ads.
  3. Google itself chooses the ad locations and number, and you can exclude pages or reduce density from the same screen.

Auto ads are the most suitable start: you don't need to place ad units manually, and they adapt to mobile automatically. The same code is loaded once in the site header.

When do ads actually appear? Usually within hours of activation, but it may take up to 48 hours. If two days pass without ads, open the browser developer tools (F12 → Console) and look for adsbygoogle errors — an ad blocker in your browser is the most common reason at first glance.

After the ads appear:

  • AdSense reports (Reports) show estimated earnings, clicks, impressions, and RPM for each page.
  • Link AdSense to Google Analytics from AdSense → Account → Access and authorization to know which of your pages bring visitors with the highest advertising value.
  • AdSense does not pay before your earnings exceed the $100 threshold, and it requires confirming your mailing address with a PIN at the first $10 — activate this step early so your payments are not delayed later.

Check tools that speed up your way

Before and after applying, these tools reveal what might delay approval or lower your earnings:

  • [Technical SEO Audit](/seo-audit): Checks your site speed, page titles, and mobile issues — the same factors an AdSense reviewer notices.
  • [Domain Appraisal Tool](/domain-search): If you're thinking of a stronger domain for your project before building a site on it, appraise its market value first.
  • [Domain Comparison](/domain-comparison): Compare your domain's strength with competitors in terms of SEO metrics and backlinks.
  • [PageSpeed Insights](https://pagespeed.web.dev/): The official Google check for mobile speed — aim for a green score in Core Web Vitals.
  • [Search Console](https://search.google.com/search-console): To ensure your pages are indexed and there are no crawl errors; a site that isn't indexed at all has poor chances of approval.

Mistakes that delay activation

From experience, these are the biggest time-wasters:

  1. Placing the verification code on one page instead of the whole site header — Google crawls many pages and might not find the tag.
  2. Forgetting ads.txt or placing it in a subdirectory — it must be in the root directly.
  3. Applying with little content and then wondering why it was rejected.
  4. Changing the domain after applying — each domain needs a separate review.
  5. Clicking your own ads "for trial" — the fastest way to have the account banned permanently.

Conclusion

Successful activation follows this order: Account → Verification tag in all page headers → ads.txt in the root → Request review → Auto ads → Link measurement. Each step has a simple verification method we've mentioned, and don't move to the next step before ensuring the previous one is done. If you are building your site on a new domain, start by appraising the domain and checking its availability — choosing the right domain from the start saves you half the problems later.
